Tonbridge Grammar School saves on waste disposal costs with Orwak
Tonbridge Grammar School in Kent, has recently slashed their waste disposal costs, whilst improving their recycling rates, by installing a waste compactor, and cardboard baler from Orwak Environmental Services.
Two Sixth Form pupils took the initiative to research ways in which the school could recycle more of their waste, and cut the cost of disposing of general waste. Joanne Griffin and Annabelle Wilkins were instrumental in developing a proposal that was then presented to the School’s Board of Governors. The proposal involved installing a 4100 waste compactor, which reduces the bulk of general waste, in order to minimise the number of waste containers on site, and also minimise the number of waste collections needed. The second part of the proposal recommended the installation of a 3100 baler for neatly and securely baling cardboard waste, in preparation for recycling. David Wells, Bursar of Tonbridge Grammar School, was thrilled with the success of the project, “We’ve been really happy with how the project has panned out. It’s not only provided the 6th Form with some further knowledge about the subject of waste reduction and recycling, but also saved the School a significant amount of money in waste disposal costs, even when taking the machine rental into consideration.” John Sweetland, area sales manager at Orwak was also pleased with the results, “We’ve seen a great improvement in the amount of waste that’s being recycled at the school since the start of the baler and compactor trial. The girls set a great example with their proposal, and it’s great to see the positive results coming through to show it’s been worthwhile.” The cardboard that’s now being baled, and sold for recycling, was previously sent to landfill at £56 per tonne. So not only is Tonbridge Grammar saving money on waste disposal, it’s also generating revenue from selling baled cardboard. David Wells continues, “We hope that other schools will follow our example and introduce such a scheme, and be able to reap the same benefits it has brought us.”
NHS Hospital aims to reduce waste disposal costs with Orwak equipment
Moorgreen Hospital in Hampshire, was looking to reduce the cost of their refuse collections and looked to Orwak for suitable waste handling equipment to help solve this problem.
Scott Jones, Head of Facilities and Environment, says “Orwak equipment was recommended to us as an effective solution to our rising waste disposal costs, by reducing the number of waste collections we need.”
John Sweetland, Area Sales Manager for Orwak, recommended a 5070 Baler and a 5030 Compactor for the site at Moorgreen Hospital. This combination of a twin chamber baler, and a bag compactor, means lower waste disposal costs by reducing the bulk of general waste in bags by compaction, and by segregating and baling cardboard and plastic waste for recycling.
Scott adds, “We’re currently collating data on exactly how much we’re saving on disposal, but so far the results are looking very encouraging!.”
Robinson’s Motor Group cut the cost of their waste
As a busy VW showroom and service centre, the Robinson’s Motor Group were becoming increasingly concerned about the cost of their waste collections.
With one of their larger showrooms using two general waste skips a week on top of their separate cardboard containers, the waste disposal bill for each of their sites could reach in excess of £6000 per annum.
When Ian McDonald, After-Sales Manager at the Norwich branch joined the company in 2006, he immediately recognised that this cost was only going to increase as landfill taxes took effect and knew exactly how to tackle this spiralling financial burden. Ian had come across the Orwak range of compactors and balers in his previous job and realised that they could offer genuine savings for the Robinson’s Motor Group.
Gary Palmer, Key Account Manager for Orwak was so confident that savings of over 40% could be achieved that he even offered to install the combined 3 chamber compactor and cardboard baler on a trial basis. This trial proved to be highly successful and immediately cut their general waste collections by more than half and enabled the Robinson Group to have their cardboard waste collected by a local recycler completely free of charge. At the Norwich branch alone, the Orwak unit will save the Robinson Motor Group over £2,500 per annum, providing them with more than enough proof to expand the trial across all of their local sites.
As Ian McDonald comments; "The Orwak baler is really reliable, easy-to-use and the savings speak for themselves! Not only have we been able to slash our waste bills, the Orwak baler also means that we can recycle all of our cardboard and prove our compliance with the Packaging Regulations. To put it simply, my boss is very happy!"
Helping the Abode Hotels Group meet environmental challenges
The Abode Hotels Group, headed by Michael Caines, the AA Chef’s Chef of the Year, is one of the UK’s fastest growing luxury hospitality Groups and a business that is committed to leading the market in environmental management. Already a
holder of the Green Tourism Award’s Bronze standard, the Group turned to Orwak to help them achieve the much coveted Gold award.
Glass in particular has always been a problem for the hospitality sector – its heavy, bulky and expensive to dispose of – but the Orwak bottle crusher provided the Abode Hotel Group with an easy and safe way to recycle all of their glass.
As Jamie concludes "The Orwak glass crusher and waste balers really have simplified the task of implementing an efficient, straightforward and cost-effective recycling scheme. I’m confident that with Orwak’s support we will achieve our goal of winning the Green Tourism Award’s Gold Standard."
At the forefront of the Abode Hotel Group’s environmental strategy has been Jamie Stevens, Group Operations Support Manager and one of the greatest challenges facing Jamie has been waste reduction and the drive to recycle more of their waste. As Jamie comments "We realised very early on that we couldn’t tackle this challenge alone and Orwak has been crucial in helping us to address our waste management processes and improve our recycling rates."
Wisdom Toothbrushes makes wise choice and huge savings with Orwak
Orwak, world leaders in supplying waste compactors and balers, have helped Wisdom Toothbrushes Limited to save approximately £40,000 per year by installing one of their waste balers.
Wisdom has been able to make these amazing savings by implementing a new waste handling policy that allows them to recycle approximately 80% of their waste that previously went to landfill. By segregating and baling waste, Wisdom has been able to turn it into a revenue stream, rather than a cost, with a local recycling firm happy to pay them for their cardboard and plastic waste.
The five-chamber Orwak baler was installed in October 2005 and the management team has been very happy with the results:
"We’re extremely happy that the baler has given us reduced waste disposal costs and an extra revenue stream, as well as a much tidier workspace and improved staff efficiencies," commented Toby Tabram, Facilities Manager.
In addition to these benefits, the ability to easily segregate and monitor their recycled materials has also aided Wisdom by allowing them to clearly detail their responsibilities under the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2005.
