Going For Gold

The Abode Hotels Group, headed by Michael Caines, the AA Chef’s Chef of the Year, is one of the UK’s fastest growing luxury hospitality Groups and a business that is committed to leading the market in environmental management. Already a holder of the Green Tourism Award’s Bronze standard, the Group turned to Orwak to help them achieve the much coveted Gold award.

At the forefront of the Abode Hotel Group’s environmental strategy has been Jamie Stevens, Group Operations Support Manager and one of the greatest challenges facing Jamie has been waste reduction and the drive to recycle more of their waste. Jamie therefore chose to work closely with Orwak, the UK’s leading supplier of recycling equipment, to ensure that any waste the Group produced was recycled wherever possible. As Jamie comments “We realised very early on that we couldn’t tackle this challenge alone and Orwak has been crucial in helping us to address our waste management processes and improve our recycling rates.“

Improving the Group’s recycling performance has been both an organisational and educational challenge but they are now able to effectively segregate and recycle a number of different waste streams, including cardboard, paper and glass. Glass in particular has always been a problem for the hospitality sector – its heavy, bulky and expensive to dispose of – but the Orwak bottle crusher provided the Abode Hotel Group with an easy and safe way for to recycle all of their glass. As Jamie concludes “The Orwak glass crusher and waste balers really have simplified the task of implementing an efficient, straightforward and cost-effective recycling scheme and allowed us to significantly improve our waste management processes. I’m confident that with Orwak’s support we will achieve our goal of winning the Green Tourism Award’s Gold Standard.”
