House of Lords Report calls for businesses to tackle waste
The recent waste reduction report from the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee has acted as a wake up call to many businesses still using Landfill as their primary waste disposal route.
The report, released in August, proposes that those businesses not achieving best practice in their waste disposal practices should face hefty financial consequences. Designed to “encourage” businesses to place greater emphasis on improving their waste management, these costs will be in additional to the existing Landfill Tax.
Despite being critical of the Governments’ efforts to reduce waste, the House of Lords report did acknowledge that the Landfill Tax escalator had been successful in reducing the amount of waste ending up in Landfill. This escalator will see year on year rises in the cost of Landfill Tax until 2011. By this time the Tax will be £56 per tonne, more than double what it cost in 2007.
Although the success of the Landfill Tax Escalator is not in doubt, the House of Lords has called for more initiatives that will persuade companies away from Landfill and towards other ‘greener’ ways to dispose of their waste.
The House of Lords report is yet another example of the growing pressure on businesses to tackle the waste they produce. With increasing legislation and ever growing waste disposal costs, it is in every organisation’s interests to see how they can better manage their waste.
