EU Landfill Directive goes live!
The latest stage of the EU Landfill Directive came into force on the 30th October 2007, yet a survey undertaken in August 2007 by PHS found that nearly half of respondents were as yet unaware of the Directive. So how equipped is your business to deal with the new “pre-treatment” requirements of the Landfill Regulations?
Although the first part of the EU Landfill Directive came into force in July 2002 but this new amendment is specifically designed to help the UK tackle the estimated 434 million tonnes of waste we produce every year. The Directive does this by placing a legal obligation on waste producers to ensure that only “pre-treated” waste can be sent to landfill. In most cases, this will mean that waste will need to be segregated and recycled, rather than going to landfill.
